Where Experiences Speak Louder

At Spanish55, we understand the importance of genuine experiences in shaping your decision to embark on a personalized Spanish learning journey. Let these experiences lead the way.

As a medical professional, I highly recommend Spanish55. They'll definitely tailor the experience to your needs. Like I said, they're very nice, very personable, very accommodating, and very easy to work with. I especially love my experience with the whole staff. They're very responsive, very kind, and very generous. I could tell that they're passionate about what they do and they helped me do what I love to do and interact with my patients in the healthcare setting every day.

Spanish55 designed a customized program to meet my needs as a busy executive trying to learn the language. I investigated traditional programs at Universities and other executive language programs but all of those programs required that I adapt my schedule to meet theirs. Spanish55 met me at my point of need and is providing excellent instruction that is calibrated to my learning pace.

To describe my level of satisfaction with my teacher is not something I can put into words. When I enrolled in classes at Spanish55, I expected a professional and knowledgeable teacher to help me become fluent. What I received is beyond my wildest expectations. I truly feel that I have more than a teacher in Widney. I have a friend and that will keep me learning. Thank you for having such outstanding teachers to help those of us who really need that kind and caring environment :)

I tried a few other companies for individual online lessons (Livelingua, Cervantes) and Spanish55 has been by far the best. I’ve been a Spanish55 student for over a year now. I started my lessons with my Coach, Alberto, last May. Alberto is an amazing tutor, I truly enjoy the lessons and our conversations.

My name is David. I’m trained as a bench scientist (with a Ph. D. in Pharmacology) and I’ve spent the last 11 years working for a business development and strategy consulting firm that works exclusively with Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical companies.

I’m happily married (my wife’s name is Traci) and I have two Siberian Forest cats (Nikita and Natasha. You can see one of them in the picture above), who came from Ukraine and Russia, respectively. When I’m not working, I like to play the guitar, read and travel. Southern Europe is my happy place, but I'm hoping to make it to Mexico and South America soon.

That’s why I became interested in learning Spanish.

I am very happy with my progress and with Spanish55. I’m planning on continuing my lessons for, at least, the next few years so I took the Quarterly Plan route. The financial aspect made most sense to me, of course, but also the long-term commitment was a key point in my decision. What I hope in my journey with Spanish55 is to improve my conversational skills. I can understand and read better than I can speak Spanish. Again, Alberto takes a lot of the credit, he’s been an excellent teacher.

In one year of working twice per week with Francis, my fiance, his family, and his friends have been astounded by my progress. I used to get lost in conversations as soon as the greetings ended. Now, I can chat with pretty much anybody, whether at restaurants, supermarkets, clubs, bars, parties, etc.

Hola a todos! My name is Katie. By day, I am a freelance editor. By night, I am a professional musician. By 2023, I hope to achieve complete Spanish fluency.

Why the urgency? In January 2023, I will marry un chilango - a native of Mexico City.

Although I've devoted my professional life to editing and music, my love of Spanish was always lurking in the background - in years of high school Spanish classes, multiple service trips to Panama, and fun vacations to Spain. But no matter how many trips or courses I took, I found myself stuck in the rut of an intermediate (B1) Spanish student.

In September 2020, I moved to Mexico City to live with my fiance. There, in interacting with his family and friends, it became apparent that the grammar and spelling lessons I'd learned in school had little value in the real world. Rather than feeling happy to get to know my fiance's loved ones, I felt embarrassed and frustrated that I couldn't understand them. Even though Spanish was all around me, why wasn't I advancing?

That's where Spanish55 came in. In October 2020, after hearing about Spanish55 on my favorite podcast (Españolistos), I nervously booked my first appointment with a Coach. I explicitly requested an instructor based in Mexico who would be able to help me decipher the (seemingly endless!) amount of Mexican slang that I heard on a daily basis. And that's how I got matched with - in my humble opinion - the kindest and most patient instructor ever, Coach Francis.

I've even taken up learning Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, from Spanish-speaking teachers. Undoubtedly my greatest feat, however, is being able to gossip with my suegra (mother-in-law) - a crucial skill to master before marrying into any family!

In the coming year, with Francis's invaluable help, I look forward to advancing from the C1 to C2 level. I am confident that fluency is just around the corner, and that the many hours that Francis has spent preparing my lesson plans, creating ingenious scenarios for me to practice grammar, and acquainting me with Mexico's beautiful and multifaceted culture will be well worth the time and effort. And the best part? I'm psyched to exchange my wedding vows with my fiance in flawless Spanish in January 2023.

P.S. Spanish55 has become a family affair! My mom also became a student of Coach Francis this past summer. We are planning on meeting Francis in-person over the holidays and toasting her amazing impact on our family. ¡Mil gracias a Spanish55!

Motivation and consistency are essential if you want to learn a language and the Spanish55 program and Coach Esther have made that easier for me

¡Hola a todos! My name is Larry Boyer y he vivido en Seattle, Washington for the last 30 years and have raised my family here. One of my passions is surfing. When I was a kid, we often took surfing trips to Baja California, driving our vans down the coast to Cabo San Lucas, surfing and camping along the way. The towns along the way were small, but always seemed to have a panadería, where we could stock up on baked goods for the day. Those experiences furthered my interest in Mexican culture and the Spanish language. My last surfing trip to Colima and Michoacán in Mexico, inspired me to start studying Spanish once again.

I was first introduced to Spanish55 while I was watching a YouTube video where one of the co-founders was talking about the school and its services. I liked what he had to say and decided I needed structure in my Spanish language studies if I was to continue to progress with the goal of becoming conversationally fluent. He estado estudiando español con Spanish55 durante 6 meses and the experience has been great.

My coach, Esther, is excellent - kind, funny and patient and has really helped me become more comfortable with everyday Spanish conversation. We even have a “frase del día” that I introduce and we discuss before each lesson. I now enjoy engaging with the hispanohablantes that live and work in my neighborhood. Motivation and consistency are essential if you want to learn a language and the Spanish55 program and Coach Esther have made that easier for me.

Being in Southern Florida, many people speak Spanish only. Right away, after my first week, I could use what I learned. It really becomes a partnership to see the students succeed, so I think that's one of the greatest things of the coaches at Spanish55.

I've been doing Spanish55 for eight months. I studied Spanish in high school and college, so I did it just because I had to, not because I wanted to, so now I'm a nurse practitioner and it makes you more marketable to be able to do history and physicals on people who speak Spanish instead of getting a translator.

I just can't be more grateful to them. I really was a little leery that I was gonna be able to learn this wonderful language, but after about four months, I can honestly say that I can converse with almost anyone in Spanish and we're able to communicate, and it's so empowering.

I started my journey just like many others who are looking to learn Spanish: learning on sites like Duolingo, etc. That's when the difference between learning and studying became clearer. I could finish my homework every day, but learning is like a marathon and working with an impersonal website was frustrating me a bit. I stumbled upon Spanish55 and scheduled my free consultation class and was assigned with Coach Monica.

Hi to my fellow students and readers!

If you made the decision to start your retirement during the pandemic, perhaps your life changed in many ways you didn't consider. In my case, my schedule was wide open and I thought, "Why not learn a new language?" They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but an old man? What can he do?

Then came the question of what language to learn. I always liked the way Spanish sounds and since there are many Spanish speakers living in the United States, plus considering our neighbors to the south who also speak the language I decided to learn Spanish. I had more than 40 years without learning a language and although Swahili is beautiful, there are not many opportunities to use it in North Carolina.

It was clear from the beginning that Monica is incredibly intelligent: she speaks several languages and her English and Spanish skills are excellent. Perhaps the most important thing about her work as my coach is her patience with this old student trying to learn.

Although there are many reasons to learn Spanish, in my case I might not have continued my classes if it were not for Coach Monica. I really enjoy my lessons with her and am very grateful for her kindness and support. She even laughs when I try to use my humor in Spanish, which shows that kindness!

I recently traveled to Costa Rica with my son. Of course, my journey to fluency is not over yet but I really enjoyed talking to Costa Ricans. No doubt they found my Spanish somewhat funny, but that's okay. I loved seeing their smiles at my attempts to communicate in Spanish.

I hope I can improve my Spanish even more and I hope Coach Monica doesn't decide to get rid of me! Learning a new language is a challenge, but for me, it's a lot of fun.

Like many of you, I googled ‘Spanish lessons’ and found Spanish55. I liked the idea of having a one-on-one tutor, and then my teacher (Coach Sofia) and I developed a connection that has made learning Spanish so much more fun than listening to audio lessons!

Hi! Mi nombre es Kim. I’m a primary care doctor who was raised in the Bay Area, California. My parents are refugees from Vietnam, and their immigrant experience has had a big impact on my desire to learn from people with different cultural backgrounds. I studied literature in college because I love language and stories, and decided to eventually pursue medicine for its opportunity to listen to people’s narratives and become a part of them.

I recently relocated to New Mexico because I wanted to go somewhere with a greater need for healthcare, especially in the area of addiction medicine. I work at First Nations - a community clinic caring for underserved populations. At my previous clinic, I often felt like I was doing my Spanish-speaking patients a disservice by not knowing a language so prevalent in California. When I took some time off in between jobs, and knowing I’d be going to New Mexico, I decided to take advantage to take Spanish lessons.

Like many of you, I googled ‘Spanish lessons’ and found Spanish55. I liked the idea of having a one-on-one tutor, and then my teacher (Coach Sofia) and I developed a connection that has made learning Spanish so much more fun than listening to audio lessons! Sofia is so committed to her work - she works all the time and yet has so much energy at every lesson, and she remembers everything about her students. You can tell she really cares about us as students and as people, which motivates me to be better at both! We share news articles in Spanish, text each other in Spanish, and of course Sofia helps me translate and practice medical scenarios. It's been really, really rewarding for me to be able to use what we've learned with our patients.

Our patients are constantly having to adjust to a society that is often inequitable. I feel like putting effort into speaking in their own language shows them we are trying to meet them where they are, instead of always the other way around. And when they are sharing vulnerable issues like abuse and trauma, or having to do vulnerable procedures like a Pap smear, being able to communicate in their language adds a layer of safety that they might not have in other areas of their lives.

I really enjoy having real-life conversations. I'm really looking forward to one day not having to use a translator with my patients, and also being able to have more and more complex conversations with Sofia, because she has such interesting perspectives.
