A story about an engineer from Florida who found more than a language - he found confidence, connection, and a deeper sense of who he is through Spanish and a coach who truly listened.

In This Story

  • A Florida engineer begins learning Spanish to connect with someone he cared about - and discovers a passion that outlasted the romance.

  • After trying apps and textbooks, personalized online Spanish lessons with his private tutor, Coach Diómedes, gave him the confidence he’d been missing.

  • Spanish now shows up in daily conversations with coworkers, neighbors, and people around South Florida.

  • Travel to Colombia and a love of Spanish music deepened his understanding of accents, slang, and culture.

  • He continues learning because Spanish has become a source of growth, joy, and genuine human connection.

A Beginning That Turned Into Something Bigger

Nicholas Teach never imagined that learning Spanish would lead to heartfelt conversations about life, long afternoons with Enrique Iglesias on repeat, and a bond with an online Spanish tutor who became something more like a therapist. A 30-year-old engineer from West Palm Beach, Florida, Nick started out with one of the oldest reasons in the book: he was dating a girl whose family spoke Spanish. Two years later, that motivation has grown into something much deeper, a way to connect, explore, and express himself in ways that surprised even him.

From Apps to a Coach Who Finally Made It Click

His early attempts to learn were typical: he used apps, textbooks, and online courses. "They served well as references," he says, "but I needed something more." That "more"? A recommendation that led him to Spanish55, where he began weekly one-on-one online Spanish lessons with his private Spanish tutor, Coach Diómedes. From the start, he appreciated the sense of ease. "Diómedes is a good friend," Nick says. "He gave me confidence! It was like talking to someone who gets you, someone who's really listening." The safe space allowed Nick to take risks, ask questions, and work through the issues he hadn't even known he carried.

Bringing Spanish Into His Everyday World

Though Spanish isn't a daily part of his technical work, Nick finds chances to practice with co-workers from Colombia, Cuba, Honduras and Puerto Rico. "Sometimes we talk during lunch or in casual moments," he explains. Living in South Florida, he's surrounded by Spanish everywhere: in restaurants, on the street, and at concerts he hopes to attend soon. "I'd love to see Enrique Iglesias live one day," he says. "Music is my favorite part of learning Spanish." Reggaetón was his entry point, but now he also listens to pop and rock in Spanish, both old and new.

Letting Go of Fear and Finding His Flow

At first, he admits, speaking was intimidating. "I had a lot of fear about making mistakes," he says. But the turning point came when he stopped obsessing over notes and test-like precision. "I used to treat lessons like strict study sessions, trying to learn something concrete every time," he recalls. Eventually, he shifted toward a more relaxed mindset. "Now I treat it like talking with a friend. That helped a lot. I started enjoying the process instead of stressing over it." He's even set a new goal for himself: to read a long novel in Spanish, start to finish, without illustrations. If you read this issue of El Boletín further, you'll discover that perhaps Diómedes influenced that decision, too!

Testing His Skills Across Borders

Nick has visited Colombia twice and hopes to explore more Spanish-speaking countries in the future. These trips gave him the chance to test his skills in the real world, and while he says movies are still tough, music and conversations have helped him absorb accents and slang. "I learned textbook Spanish," he jokes, "but the hardest part is always the colloquialisms." Still, being able to recognize different regional styles and phrases has become one of the most fulfilling parts of the process.

Using Spanish to Help Others Feel Seen

Sometimes, Spanish shows up in surprising ways, like the time he helped a local Spanish speaker confirm an address. "It felt good," Nick says. "Maybe I made their day a little easier." For him, learning Spanish is both a means of personal growth and also an opportunity to help others. "Here in Florida, there are so many people who don't speak English. So if I can make them feel more comfortable, even a little, that's a win for both of us."

Showing Up Even on the Hard Days

Still, there have been more challenging days. "Some days, I just want to cancel the class. I'm tired, burned out, or feeling like I'm getting worse," he admits. But every time, he shows up, and leaves feeling better. "I remind myself why I started. And after each lesson, I've learned something new. That keeps me going." He believes the most challenging part isn't grammar but starting. "Just saying that first word can be terrifying," he says. "But once you do, the fear melts away."

When a Spanish Lesson Turns Into Support

One of the most powerful moments in his learning experience wasn't linguistic at all. "There was a difficult time in my personal life," Nick recalls. "And I told Diómedes I was having trouble making it to class. He reached out, as a teacher and as a person, and said, 'I understand what you're going through.' That moment meant a lot to me. He reminded me that this is about connection."

What He Wants Other Learners to Know

Asked what advice he'd give his past self, Nick doesn't hesitate: "Go with the flow. Don't stress. It's supposed to be fun." These days, he sees every lesson as a step toward a deeper understanding of himself, Spanish, and the people around him. And when he thinks about how far he's come, he's quick to give credit where it's due. "I love you, Coach Diómedes," he says with a smile. "Thank you for being the reason I keep showing up."
