A Lifelong Desire to Learn Spanish
James McGuire is a man of many passions, he plays guitar, exercises regularly, loves to read political history, and has spent a decade as a caregiver for his father. But beneath his diverse interests, one goal has always stood out: learning Spanish. "It was always something I wanted to do, my entire life," he reflects. But like many people, James's efforts to learn Spanish hit several dead ends. "I tried apps, in-person tutoring, even Rosetta Stone and Babbel, but nothing worked." It wasn't until he found Spanish55 that his progress truly took off. Sounds familiar?

A Student-Tutor Friendship That Transformed Learning
For the past three years, James has been a dedicated student at Spanish55, working with his online Spanish tutor, Coach Monica. His experience with her has helped him finally gain ground in the language and, as an added bonus, he has also gained a close friend.
"She’s not just my Spanish teacher; she’s one of my best friends. I can always count on her," he says warmly. When James’s father passed away six months ago, Monica was there for him every day, offering her support in and out of class, a kindness James says he will never forget.
Learning Beyond Language: Curiosity and Culture
James's love for learning goes far beyond language. An avid reader of political history, he's currently making his way through Robert Caro's monumental multi-tome biography of Lyndon B. Johnson, "The Years of Lyndon Johnson", a history bookworm classic. "I'm on the third volume, it's about 6,000 pages in total," he says, his voice filled with the same enthusiasm he brings to his Spanish studies. James has also dabbled in reading Spanish-language books, including "Like Water for Chocolate", though he admits, "I'm having some difficulty comprehending most of it." A few months back, our YouTube Channel discussed how this particular book posed a challenge for Spanish learners, suggesting better alternatives to help ease into the habit of reading in Spanish. In fact, even Coach Monica suggested he start with more accessible material. Still, James remains committed to pushing his limits.
Patient Guidance That Led to Steady Progress
"She’s always patient, knows exactly what homework I need, and really pushes me to improve," James shares. Her guidance has helped him master difficult concepts and provided him with the confidence to use Spanish in his daily life.
How Learning Spanish Strengthened His Memory
One of the most surprising benefits of learning Spanish, according to James, has been the unexpected improvement in his memory… and other, let’s say, more ethereal consequences.
"I had memory issues from sleep problems, but learning Spanish has brought my memory back full force," he explains. This newfound mental sharpness has manifested in surprising ways, he even started dreaming in Spanish. "I woke up one day and my dead aunt was speaking to me in Spanish in my dream," he recalls, laughing at how far he’s come since starting his lessons.
Daily Practice Turning Into Real-World Conversations
Despite the challenges, James has thrown himself fully into his Spanish studies, practicing daily and finding ways to use the language in real-life situations. "When I get a haircut, I try to speak with my stylist in Spanish. I also try to order food in Spanish when I go out," he says. These small interactions are part of his broader goal to become fluent, a goal that he feels is within reach, especially with an upcoming immersion program in Costa Rica.

Facing Grammar Challenges with Humor and Discipline
James's progress has not been without its hurdles. Like many Spanish learners, he finds mastering verb tenses, particularly the difference between the imperfect and preterite, to be one of the toughest aspects. "Monica keeps drilling it into me, but it’s still a challenge," he admits. However, he appreciates that even if he makes mistakes with the tenses, native speakers can still understand him. "That’s reassuring," he says.
A Reminder That It’s Never Too Late to Learn Spanish
At 52, James has proven that learning a language is possible at any age, dispelling the common myth that it's too late to start. "You can learn a language at any age," he insists. He’s proud of the discipline he’s maintained throughout his studies, dedicating one to two hours a day to his lessons. And while he jokes that part of his motivation comes from not wanting to let Monica down, it’s clear that his passion for the language is genuine.

Looking Ahead to Travel and New Adventures
Looking ahead, James is excited about his future travels to Spanish-speaking countries like Mexico, Colombia, and Spain. Though he’s only been to England so far, he eagerly anticipates the adventures that await him. "In about 10 or 15 years, I’ll be traveling all over the world," he says, his excitement palpable.
James’s Encouragement for New Spanish Learners
For anyone just starting to learn Spanish, James offers simple but powerful advice: "Practice, practice, practice. Use the language as much as you can." With 200 lessons under his belt and a strong bond with Coach Monica, James’s story highlights the importance of persistence, friendship, and embracing new challenges.
James’s progress wouldn’t have been possible without the support and guidance of his private Spanish tutor, Monica, whose thoughtful, creative approach has been key to his growth. Let’s explore the story of Coach Monica, a lifelong learner and passionate mentor who brings culture, connection, and craftsmanship to every Spanish lesson.
