Why is it a good idea to learn Spanish?

There are countless reasons to learn Spanish. First, let’s go over a few facts about the proliferation of the Spanish language. Spanish is the mother tongue for around 489 million people around the world. About 100 million people use it as their second language. Based on the number of people speaking Spanish, it is the fourth most spoken in the world.

Culture and traveling

Despite being spoken in different corners of the world, the Spanish language is still quite uniform amongst countries. Especially at a high cultural level. This allows the native Spanish-speakers from either side of the Atlantic to understand each other easily.

From a cultural standpoint, the Spanish language has been key in architecture advancement, art appreciation, and universal literature.

Growth

The number of people who speak Spanish has grown continuously (and exponentially) ever since the American colonization. Over the XXI century, the Spanish language is expected to grow faster than most of the other major languages around the world. Thus, having a growing international influence. The most conservative expectations, following the survey that Instituto Cervantes offers every year, are that in 2050 there will be around 550 million people who speak Spanish. And this is only in countries where it is an official language.

Therefore, we are not counting Hispanics residing in the United States. This will also increase significantly, along with the people who speak it as a second or third language.

Work and business

Spanish is known for opening doors in the workplace as more countries continue to develop. For this reason, over 46 million people study Spanish around the world. Spanish is the most studied foreign language in non-Hispanic countries in America and Europe.

Adults looking to access the international labor market are turning to Spanish. Proficiency in the Spanish language has proven valuable in helping companies increase their growth expectations on a global scale.

Official language

The Spanish language is an international language. Nowadays, Spanish is the official language of the UN and its agencies. As well as in the European Union and many other international agencies. 21 countries around the globe have Spanish as an official language, this number continues to climb year after year.

Internet

As the internet began expanding in the last decade in underdeveloped countries, so did the number of native Spanish-speakers using the internet to connect with the world. At this time, more than 460 million people use the internet daily (out of them, 1 in 9 come from Spain). All together, represent about 8% of the world's internet users. In the social media space, Spanish is now in second place right after English.
