Languages, Literature, and Lifelong Learning - The Story of Spanish Tutor Atenea Gonzalez
From Barcelona Beginnings to a Lifelong Calling
Picture this: sunny, creative, beautiful Barcelona. Early university years. People from all over the globe. Spanish Teacher Atenea Gonzalez’s foray into language teaching began quite naturally during her years in Spain. Surrounded by people from all corners of the world, Atenea found herself offering informal, friendly private Spanish lessons.
“A friend would say, ‘Hey, I know someone who wants to learn Spanish,’ and it just took off from there,” she recalls. What started as casual conversations blossomed into a fulfilling career spanning nearly two decades and several countries.
Born in Mexicali and raised in Tecate, Baja California, Atenea’s academic pursuits took her far from home. She earned her degree in Hispanic American Language and Literature in Mexico before relocating to Barcelona, Spain. There, she completed a master’s degree and post-graduate studies in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory. Although she has spent recent years back in Tecate for family reasons, Atenea’s time in Europe left an indelible mark on her.
“Spain, especially, felt like a second home,” she shares. “I always felt comfortable there—there’s a mix of cultures that reminds me of home, but it’s also safer, more organized.”

Where Language Meets Literature and Art
Atenea’s passion for Spanish transcends language instruction, deeply embedded with her love for literature, art, and the broader human experience. “I’ve always been passionate about the arts,” she explains. “Literature, especially 19th-century novels, is my true love. If I could do it again, I’d study Literature.”
Her diverse interests extend to museums, concerts, cinema, hiking, board games, and crosswords. “I’m the person who does the New York Times Mini Crossword and the El Pais crossword every day,” she laughs. For Atenea, engaging with culture is not merely a hobby but a vital part of her identity.
With over twenty years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign language, Atenea has honed her skills in multiple languages. Growing up near the U.S. border, English was a seamless part of her life. “I don’t even remember learning English,” she says. “It was always around me—family in the U.S., TV, books. It’s like I absorbed it by osmosis.”
In addition to English, she has studied French, Catalan, and German, currently working towards a B2 certification in German by taking classes twice a week. This multilingual proficiency enriches her teaching methodology, allowing her to draw meaningful comparisons between languages to illuminate the nuances of Spanish for her students.

Finding Her Place at Spanish55
Atenea’s professional path led her to Spanish55 in early 2019, where her extensive background made her an invaluable addition. Initially unfamiliar with remote work, she adapted swiftly. “At first, I wasn’t sure about the camera or online teaching, but the team at Spanish55, especially the already legendary Alberto, really supported me,” she reflects.
The onset of the pandemic further tested her resilience. Isolated in Queretaro, Atenea immersed herself in her work to navigate the challenges of lockdown. “I was alone and just needed to stay busy. I took on as many students as possible, morning and afternoon, even weekends,” she explains.
This period solidified her confidence in online teaching and deepened her connections with her students—best of both worlds, even in dire circumstances. These relationships have become a cornerstone of Atenea’s life. “I still have three students who started in 2019,” she says with pride. “They know my pets, my partner, my ups and downs. And I know theirs. We’ve been through so much together—they’re practically family now.”
Her commitment goes beyond teaching vocabulary; she provides a steadfast presence for her students, fostering bonds that transcend the classroom and endure through various life stages and locations.

Teaching with Heart, Culture, and Lennon’s Spirit
Atenea draws inspiration from John Lennon, admiring his authenticity and values. “Lennon was authentic, living life on his own terms,” she reflects. “His message of love and peace really resonates with me. He was all about being true to yourself and spreading love, which I believe in too.”
This philosophy of living genuinely and fearlessly is mirrored in her approach to teaching, where she encourages students to embrace their learning journeys with openness and passion.
Lennon once said that life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans—a sentiment Atenea embodies daily. Her life is a collection of purposeful actions: sharing her linguistic expertise, embracing new experiences and languages, and just living life fully.
Atenea’s approach to teaching Spanish is filled with purpose and warmth. She guides students through the language’s complexities, shares book recommendations, and builds connections that reach far beyond the classroom. Her Barcelona friends would be proud.
