From Classroom to Caribbean - How Spanish Tutor Francis Baeza Builds Connection Through Language and Friendship
A Natural Teacher Finds Her Calling Early On
From the moment she stepped into a university classroom to cover for a missing teacher, Francis "Fran" Baeza knew she was put on this Earth to teach. Though initially nervous, she realized that despite her shy nature and age, much younger than the average student she was teaching, she felt at ease when leading a group, like "a fish in water." Hold on to that idea, as water would become key later in her life.

As a teenager, her passion for languages led her to pursue a degree in English. Over the years, Fran's career has evolved from teaching local students to coaching adults from various parts of the world. Now, with nearly four years as private Spanish tutor at Spanish55, she has become an indispensable mentor and friend to her students, guiding them through the intricacies of the Spanish language.
From Online Lessons to Real Friendships
Fran, a self-described introvert, shares that her work as a private Spanish tutor has been filled with unexpected connections. "Many of my students have become friends," she says, smiling as she recalls moments like being invited by a family in New Jersey to spend Christmas Eve together. While her primary role is always guiding students through language lessons, these experiences have naturally, organically grown into genuine relationships.
"I was there when one of my student's daughters got engaged, saw her wedding, and met her husband," she reflects.

Teaching Spanish is a journey Fran took on during the pandemic, a period that tested and shaped her role as a Spanish teacher. For her, doing this for a living is deeply personal, and it shows in how she integrates her students' lives into their learning experiences.
"One of my students recently had a baby," she laughs. "I've been sending him lullabies in Spanish, helping him navigate baby vocabulary, even discussing the challenges of new parenthood." Fran clearly values these moments; her work doesn't end at grammar rules and vocabulary lists—she builds genuine relationships.
A Journey from Yucatan to the Caribbean
Originally from Yucatan, Fran has a deep love for her heritage, though life has taken her far from home. After not securing a spot at her chosen school, she moved to Chetumal, Quintana Roo, where she completed her degree and found her stride as an educator. Later, after a teaching opportunity, Fran moved to the picturesque island of Saint Lucia in the Caribbean and eventually made a new life there.
"Now I'm here not for work but for love," she smiles, explaining how she met her husband on the island. In addition to her classes, she helps him run his business, managing schedules and tasks for his pest control company, seamlessly blending her love for teaching with her growing role in the community.

Lessons from Motherhood and Self-Discovery
Having raised two children on her own, she speaks warmly of the lessons her mother taught her—strength, independence, and never asking for help unless it's truly needed. "Everything I am, I owe to my mom," she reflects, noting the admiration she holds for her. Yet, she's also grateful for her daughter, who encouraged her to take steps toward personal happiness, even through difficult choices.
"My daughter taught me self-worth at a young age; she always reminded me that beauty isn't just external. Thanks to her, I made some life changes I'd avoided for years."
Life by the Water and a Love for Adventure
Today, Fran balances her teaching with a love for the outdoors. Remember how she feels about bodies of water? As she puts it, "living on the water, being on an island, means every weekend can be an adventure," she shares. She spends her free time swimming, snorkeling, and exploring the natural beauty of Saint Lucia with her husband. Her weekends alternate between working on projects around the house and indulging in "mud-filled, thrilling escapades" at nearby waterfalls.

Teaching Beyond Grammar - The Heart of Spanish55
Fran is clear that her role as private Spanish tutor at Spanish55 goes deeper than a typical job. To her, it feels like a calling. "It doesn't feel like work when I'm with my students. It feels like I'm just spending time with people who matter to me." She sees her role as part teacher, part mentor, and part support system, a role that touches on both language and life. It's about being a language partner and, more often than not, a friend.

After a marathon
"Teaching Spanish is like a pastime for me, too," she says.
Fran realizes she makes a meaningful impact on her student's lives through their photos and video calls, things that strengthen her connection to each student and reflect her commitment to making Spanish55 a place where learning goes beyond textbooks, creating a lasting, personal impact—one that occasionally crosses over to real, in-person hugs and shared tears of joy.
